Group sets and groups with respect to sections in NUS Canvas

When creating groups, the Require group members to be in the same section option is of little use as there is usually one or more large sections in each course corresponding to lecture groups. This prevents Canvas from restricting students to choose groups within their own tutorial groups (if they are asked to form their own groups).

Alternatives:

1. Preferred: One group set, name the groups T1-G1, T1-G2 etc for groups within tutorial group 1, T2-G1, T2-G2 etc for groups within tutorial group 2 and so on.
2. Only if you are not using group assignments: Create one group set per tutorial section, then create the tutorial groups for each tutorial within the respective group set. Note: if you have group assignments, this will mean that for each assignment you need one assignment for each tutorial section.

In either case, students need to be careful to join a group within their own tutorial group.
